Wind buffeting top down above 60 in a Camaro SS convertible, does a wind deflector actually fix it

2019 Camaro SS convertible, 1SS, Riverside Blue, black soft top. bought it last october so this is my first real summer with it.

problem: top down on I-35 heading up to Duluth, anything over about 60 and the air comes back over the windshield, curls around and hits the back of my head like somebody slapping me with a pillow. my wife ties her hair down and it still ends up everywhere. at 45 on county roads it's perfect. at 70 i get a headache by Hinckley.

Chevy sells a wind deflector for these that sits over the back seats. it's not cheap. before i spend the money, has anybody run one, and does it really change anything at highway speed or is it a 400 dollar placebo?

not a Camaro, but the physics are the same. the single biggest thing is the side windows. up vs down is the difference between pleasant and a hurricane in my Miata, way more than the little mesh panel between the roll hoops. try it with all four windows up before you buy anything. if it's still bad with the glass up, then the deflector is the next step.

had the Ford version on a Mustang before this one. it's a mesh screen that clips into the rear seat area. it worked, i'll say that plainly. i could talk to my wife at 70 without yelling and her hair stayed in roughly the same zip code. downsides: nobody sits in the back while it's in, and it's a big flat thing you have to store somewhere when it's out. it lived behind the water heater in my garage for two years.

i work on Corvettes but we see Camaros come through the shop too. the factory deflector for your car clips into existing points behind the front seats, no drilling. buy the GM one, not the cheap knockoff. the knockoffs fit loose and rattle, and a rattle behind your head at 70 is worse than the wind.

the accessory listing for your model year is on chevrolet.com under accessories. get the part number there and then shop it at a dealer parts site, it's usually less than the window sticker price.

for what it's worth, the C8 convertibles have a rear glass you can leave up with the top down and it knocks most of the buffeting out. your Camaro doesn't have that trick so the deflector is the closest you'll get.

going to be the contrarian. buffeting is part of the deal. wear a hat with a strap, drive 62 in the right lane and let the trucks go. you bought a convertible to feel the air, and that's the air.

did it anyway. GM deflector, 455 delivered from a dealer parts site, took ten minutes with the instructions and nothing else.

tested it saturday on 36 out to Stillwater and back, windows up. below 65 the slapping is gone. 65 to 70 there's still some swirl at the top of my head but i can hear the radio, which i could not before. above 75 it doesn't matter what you do. the kids are not happy because the back seat is now a shelf, but they mostly ride in the other car anyway.

so not a placebo. miata guy was right that windows up is most of it, the screen gets you the rest.

marla here. we tried everything on our Boxster on the Savannah causeway and the thing that worked best for me was foam earplugs from the drugstore. a dollar a pair. ed laughed and then bought his own.
